Over 3000 signed petitions Handed to IESO
Stakeholder engagement!
Save Georgian Bay advocates successfully handed over 3000 signed petitions to an Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) representative January 27, mere days before the IESO report was due.
These petitions oppose the TCE’s proposed pumped storage project at the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre on Department of National Defense (DND) lands in Meaford and request that this proposed project does not go forward.
Save Georgian Bay representatives had asked to meet with IESO leadership over two weeks prior, with a response that IESO would receive the petitions but “no meeting”. When arriving at the IESO offices in Toronto, the representatives were told that “you need an appointment” if you want to meet with someone.
Standing in the reception area, former Meaford city council candidate Eric Ennis patiently stayed on the phone with a remote receptionist -requesting a meeting, while Freda Ariella Muscovitch appealed to other staff present in the office to receive the petitions and hear the presentation to explain the key concerns. Meanwhile Tom Buck, out of town, emailed one IESO Stakeholder engagement manager “Where is your community engagement value if you don’t engage.” One might conclude that residents of Meaford and Save Georgian Bay supporters advocating to protect Georgian Bay are not among the stakeholders that IESO engages.
Thankfully, this three-pronged approach was successful in bringing one IESO staff member to receive the petitions and to listen to Mr. Ennis’ presentation. The staff member would not allow photos of the actual handover of petitions, but agreed to receive them on behalf of IESO.

As you probably know, IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator) concluded that “TCE’s proposal did not provide sufficient value to Ontario’s electricity consumers.” However, the minister of energy has asked IESO to re-evaluate the TC Energy proposal to see if it can provide sufficient value. IESO will announce their decision on January 31, 2023.
Save Georgian Bay has prepared a sample petition letter for you to email to IESO Executives and politicians at all levels of government. We aim to send 1,000 email-letters ASAP to inform them that Meaford citizens oppose the TCE’s Pump Storage proposal. Our sample letter includes names, and email addresses.
